Privacy Policy

NewsParlour (“we”, “us”, “NewsParlour”) operates newsparlour.ng, a headline aggregation service. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. We've kept the list short on purpose — we don't collect more than the site actually needs to work.

1. Information We Collect

Account information (only if you create an account)

If you sign up with email and password, we store your name, email address, and a securely hashed copy of your password (we never store your password in plain text, and no one at NewsParlour can read it). If you sign in with Google, we store the name and email address Google shares with us, and a Google account identifier used to recognize you on your next visit — we do not receive or store your Google password.

Category preferences

If you're signed in and choose to follow specific categories, we save that choice against your account so your filtered view persists across visits.

Anonymous usage data

We count how many times each headline is clicked, to power our “Popular” rankings. This is stored against the headline itself, not against you — we do not log your IP address, device information, or link clicks back to your identity or account.

We do not run third-party advertising trackers or analytics/pixel services on NewsParlour, and we do not sell, rent, or trade personal information to anyone.

2. Cookies

If you sign in, we set a single session cookie so you stay logged in between page loads. It expires automatically after 7 days of inactivity, or immediately when you sign out. We don't use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.

3. Third-Party Content

NewsParlour aggregates headlines and short excerpts from Nigerian and international news publishers via their public RSS feeds. Every headline links back to the original publisher's own site, where their own privacy practices apply once you click through. We don't control, and aren't responsible for, how third-party publishers handle your data on their own sites.

4. How We Use Google Sign-In Data

We use Google Sign-In (via Google's OAuth service) only to authenticate you and create/access your NewsParlour account — we request nothing beyond your basic profile (name, email, profile photo). We don't access your Gmail, Google Drive, contacts, or any other Google service, and we don't share your Google account data with any other party.

5. Data Retention

Headlines themselves are only kept for a rolling window (currently 90 days) before being removed automatically — NewsParlour is built around current news, not a permanent archive.

Account information is kept for as long as your account exists. If you'd like your account and associated data deleted, contact us (details below) and we'll remove it.

6. Your Rights

You can ask us at any time to: tell you what personal information we hold about you, correct inaccurate information, or delete your account and associated data entirely. Email us and we'll act on it promptly.

7. Children's Privacy

NewsParlour is a general-audience news service and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Security

Passwords are hashed with bcrypt before storage, all traffic to newsparlour.ng is encrypted (HTTPS), and our database is not publicly reachable — it only accepts connections from the application itself. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable, standard precautions to protect your information.

9. Changes to This Policy

If we make a material change to how we handle your information, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of NewsParlour after a change means you accept the updated policy.
